April Long

2016 Water Leaders Class

Long2April Long works to improve, protect, and enjoy the Roaring Fork River in Aspen.

After growing up in rural northeast Alabama and graduating from Auburn University with a degree in Biosystems Engineering, she worked for several years as a water resources engineer with a consulting firm in Nashville, TN, establishing stormwater management programs and funding mechanisms for municipalities across the country.

April began the Clean River Initiative for the City of Aspen in 2008.  She is the stormwater manager and Clean River Initiative program manager for the City of Aspen, focusing on water quality and river health improvements for the Roaring Fork River. April’s work ranges from writing policy, regulations, and technical design guidelines to master planning, design and construction of award-winning capital projects that use creative and natural approaches for removing pollutants from stormwater runoff.  April is a steering committee member of the Roaring Fork Watershed Collaborative and works closely with other mountain resort communities to effectively and creatively solve stormwater management and river health issues that are unique to mountain towns.  April has no free time because she has a three year old and twin one year olds. However, if she had free time she would spend it rafting, fishing, biking, camping, skiing, hiking, and baking. April wishes she could drink more wine and get more sleep.
