Aimee Konowal

2014 Water Leaders Alumni

Aimee Konowal is the Environmental Data Unit (EDU) Manager for the Water Quality Control Division (WQCD) at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.  She has a Bachelor of Science in Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering from Pennsylvania State University and a Master of Science in Environmental Sciences from California University of Pennsylvania.  She started her career at WQCD in water quality standards development.  She currently manages a diverse staff in EDU through two main work groups: an assessment team that reports on the status of surface water quality in Colorado and a monitoring and data management team that collects and manages chemical, physical and biological data from lakes and streams all over the state.  Past achievements include the development of water temperature standards in Colorado, writing a Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) for pollutant reduction in the East Fork of the Arkansas River and leading a large stakeholder process for the development of an assessment methodology for the 303(d) List of Impaired Waters.  A current notable challenge is leading her team through the Clean Water Act Section 401 water quality certification process for Army Corps of Engineers 404 Permits for major trans-mountain water supply projects in the state.  Aimee is originally from Pittsburgh, enjoys dance parties with her family and dreams of traveling internationally again.  She recently realized how much she likes skiing after hating snowboarding for years and tries to squeeze in yoga or a run any chance she gets (which isn't often).
